To rescue, rehabilitate and reintegrate street children to mainstream society

Separately, we continuously undertake institutional strengthening initiatives within the organization for promotion of quality service delivery, compliance with different regulations and adoption of best practices in child & youth management.

Wema is known in Mombasa as one of the strongest organizations working with street/slum children and has a good reputation, also with the authorities. Wema works in partnership with a number of other Civil Society Organizations and corporate bodies within and out of Mombasa.

Wema has 20 years worth of experience in street/slum children related interventions and has well trained and qualified staffs who are experts in the field of social services, with years of experience in the field, working not only with street/slum children, but also with the County and National governments, faith based organizations, volunteer placement organizations, learning institutions and the media.

From the humble beginning of catering for only 6 street girls in 1993, Wema Centre expanded its work to include street and community outreach, educational support, healthcare and vocational training now benefitting over 500 beneficiaries both directly and indirectlyy.

In recognition of the impact of Wema’s work and its commitment to transform street children and other vulnerable young people into fulfilled and responsible adults, Wema Centre was awarded The Kellogg’s Child Development Award in New York by The World of Children Inc, and Lucy Yinda (the founder of Wema Centre) was awarded the Head of State Commendation medal by former Kenyan President H.E Mwai Kibaki, in 2005.
