Why this matters

The need we're responding to.

The first three pillars are what we do for children. This one is what makes them possible — and what makes them last. Without it, Wema's impact would depend on heroics. With it, it depends on systems.

Our 2025–2027 plan invests in the boring, essential work: governance, finance, safeguarding, technology, fundraising diversification, and partnerships with government, schools, hospitals and businesses. It isn't the part of the work that wins photographs — but it's the part that means the work continues.

What we do

The work, in four parts.

  • Governance & safeguarding

    Board oversight, child-protection policy, safeguarding training for every staff and volunteer, transparent audit and reporting.

  • Funding diversification

    Balancing grants, institutional donors, individual giving, M-Pesa, corporate partnerships and earned income.

  • Partnerships

    County government, schools, hospitals, faith communities, employers — Wema cannot do this work alone, and doesn't try.

  • Monitoring, evaluation & learning

    Honest measurement of what works and what doesn't — including the courage to change programmes that aren't delivering.

    Annual reports, audited accounts, programme outcomes — published. Wema is accountable to the children, the families and the donors who make it possible.

  • Local first

    Where we can buy from Mombasa businesses, hire from Mombasa, partner with Mombasa institutions — we do.

  • Plan honestly

    Our strategic plan names what hasn't worked alongside what has. That honesty is how we earn the trust to keep going.
