Because hope deserves a cake.
For many of the children who come through Wema's doors, no-one has ever remembered their birthday. So once a year, we remember them all — together.
The tradition
A day we built for the children who never had one.
When Lucy Yinda opened Wema's doors in 1993, she met a hard question very quickly: how do you celebrate the birthday of a child who isn't sure when theirs is, or who has never had a cake of their own?
The answer was to celebrate them together. Every August, on a single chosen day, every child who has passed through Wema's care is sung to. There are cakes. There are gifts. There are old graduates who come back to dance.
The day isn't a fundraiser. It's the gentlest part of our calendar, and the part we'll keep doing for as long as there's a Wema. It's also the day that most reminds us why we started.
Sponsor a birthday
KES 12,000 / $100 makes one child's day.
Sponsor a celebration kit for one child — meal, cake, gift and a printed card they keep. Group sponsorships welcome: corporate teams, families and friends often sponsor a whole year-group together.
- A celebration meal with the child's favourite foods
- A simple birthday cake to share with their year-group
- A wrapped gift chosen with care — books, sports kit, or something practical
- A photograph and printed card the child can keep
