ON 2nd December 2016, Wema Centre held a colourful celebration to mark the graduation of 2016’s Vocational Class. This year, a total of 37 youth Graduated after successfully completing the 12 months- fully sponsored Integrated Vocational Program.
The program seeks to equip deserving youth with relevant livelihood skills ranging from cookery, Housekeeping & Laundry, tailoring & dressmaking to Computer literacy skills. It provides an environment where latent skills are identified and refined so as to enable beneficiaries to explore other opportunities outside Wema for self-reliance purposes.
Beneficiaries of the prestigious training program are normally identified with the help of our social workers in Mombasa who work closely with existing local institutions like Child & Youth- focused organizations, schools, religious leaders, local administration committees e.t.c, to identify and select deserving youth using an agreed upon selection criteria for enrolment consideration.
The selection process also involves conducting home visits for complete household assessment, to help ascertain the specific needs of each potential beneficiary.
The Guest of Honour for this year’s Graduation was Mr. Juma, the Operations Manager for Bahari Beach Hotel. Other guests included Parents/caregivers of the outgoing class, area Chiefs, sub- chiefs & Village heads, Bamburi Education Enforcers Committee (BEECO), and DOT Kenya.
After graduation, the graduates are now due for internships at different institutions (hotels, Hospitals, Schools etc) within Kenya, from January 2017. Bahari Beach Hotel has already pledged to offer 5 internship positions to the top students in the just graduated class.
